Moving Into Your First Apartment: Summertime And The Moving Was Easy

There is only one thing more stressful than moving a college kid into an apartment across the country. Moving two…in the same week…in different states. I’m not going to tell you about the pinched nerve from a herniated disk to look like a hero, or anything, but just keep that in the back of your mind while reading. (I am still dreaming of a spa weekend.)

Moving into an apartment is not like moving into a dorm. There is way more stuff to consider and the checklist for what needs to be done is long. Lots of decisions to make aside from picking out an apartment, such as what to do about furniture. Are you going to start bargain hunting in town or schlep the stuff from your basement?

We got smart. We didn’t do either. We chose CORT. And it was by far the easiest part of the move.

eclipse_bedroom_studentThis is not my daughter’s apartment, but look how pretty it is!

dakota_skyline_student_bedroom_package_2lrAnd with a few key strokes it could be yours.

One day over the summer my husband and daughter took about 5 minutes and signed up online on CORT’s  student rental page.  They chose a student package that was right for her and a few months later when we arrived at the apartment with suitcases in hand, boxes full of dishes, pots and pans, the furniture was already in place. It looked great and was such a relief to have that part done. All we had to do was unpack and stock the refrigerator. Our biggest challenge was where to put all her shoes.

So when CORT contacted me and asked if I would write about their service,  I said, “Heck, YEAH!” because we had a great experience with them and we were already recommending them to all our college parent friends.

Did you know that CORT, a Berkshire Hathaway Company, is the nation’s leading provider of transition services, including furniture rental for home and office, event furnishings, destination services, apartment locating, touring and other services.? With more than 100 offices, showrooms and clearance centers across the United States, operations in the United Kingdom and partners in more than 70 countries, no other furniture rental company can match CORT’s breadth of services and company-wide commitment to providing excellent customer service. Wishing you an easy move!

What an awesome service. Too bad I didn’t know about it when I moved my kid into his apartment this year. Thanks for sharing and I’ll pass the info along to anyone else in the same boat in the future.

It is such a small world – I have a close friend who works for Cort yet never knew they also provided this service for dorms. Good to know for my college freshman daughter when she decides to move off campus.

My daughter used it for her apartment, but I’m sure they would do dorms too if they had the space.

Who knew? I never worked have thought of renting college apartment furniture, but what a great idea! Will need to tell my daughter to see if they have a location near her university.

This is a great service for parents and students to know about. We looked into it, but learned that there was no way to know exactly what the furniture would look like, as it varied from city to city and whatever was in stock. My daughter and her roommate had a definite vision for their first apartment, so this was just too big of a gamble. Perhaps this is something that Cort can work on.

Yes, it would be great if you could pick exactly what you want, but most of their furniture and fabrics are pretty neutral so it was easy to decorate around them.

Great idea… it never occured to me to rent their furniture! Our apartment moving experience was only a few hours’ drive. I think you deserve that spa day.

While I have not heard of CORT, I am stunned that this is such a new service. Makes so much sense. Also, is it only for studings?

Shelley, it’s not just for students. I know of some recent grads who used them when they moved to a new city for work.

Both of my daughters went to school out of state (one out of country) and furnishing their apartments was really a challenge. One took the Craiglist route, and another had a roommate with very generous parents. In both cases, we supplemented with IKEA, and the furniture we bought was left behind when they moved on. This is a good alternative.

Kim, it was so easy, especially since it was out of state. I’m always in favor of anything to lessen the stress.

Thanks for the advice. I would have never thought of CORT, now it is at the top of my list when my kids go away to college!

No doubt Warren Buffet has something to do with how wonderful CORT is. What a wonderful service and I’m so glad you are writing about this important company!

That’s really interesting. I had no idea a service like CORT even existed. My kids are 13 and 16, so it’s not a need now, but eventually they’ll launch. (Right?)

Sounds like a fabulous service. I got very lucky with my youngest two girls (a year apart). They both chose the same college, so although it was seven hours away from home, the moves were easier than most. Kudos to you for successfully tackling the challenge!
