I spent the early morning unsubscribing from email alerts from stores I don’t even remember subscribing to and turning off email alerts from a social media platform I rarely visit (*cough* Google+).
I’m tired of the noise. I’m tired of my inbox overflowing with stuff I don’t want to see and probably never will. I’m tired of scrolling and scrolling through feed on my cell phone to get to the emails I really want to see. (See’s Candy, I’m keeping you.)
What seemed like a good idea at the time, a luxury even, has become overwhelming. Stop the madness!
Buh-bye, cooking sites (I don’t even cook!), and tons of home decorating sites. Enough already. I know I need new drapes, I’ll get to them soon. Promise.
And that camping site – ME, camping? – you’ve got to be kidding. My idea of camping is a Four Seasons on the edge of town.
Enough of the beeps and bleeps. I’ve heard your messages loud and clear and it’s giving me a headache.
Shush, just shush.

Good for you! I can totally relate. I did that a long time ago and still have to from time to time. I was in Michael’s the other day picking up art supplies for my daughter and at the checkout they asked for me email address. I said, “Why do you need that?” “To send coupons,” they said. “No thanks!” I said. It took me 3 years to get off of KMart’s email list and I don’t even know how I got on it.
I am jealous. That is what I want to do! I swear every time I take my name off more pop up.
This is why I love gmail… it separates the “social” from the important stuff.
I hear ya, though, too much noise!
It is crazy! I notice a huge increase after a conference. I feel like people think since you exchanged cards they can automatically subscribe you to their blog. No cool! Have a fabulous day!
Yep. Something else to do. I either filter some of mine straight to the trash to special folders.
I’m with you…my big thing now is to replace all those “blogs I follow” in my sidebar. Blogging evolves over time and those “camper spots” need to be emptied. Thank you for the reminder.
I periodically do this, but it never seems to end…
I am so with you about the noise!
I declared “electronic bankruptcy” with my old email, it’s still there but I hardly ever even check it. People know not to email me there because it’s where all the stuff you listed above gets sent. My real email needs some cleaning out too…no doubt some IT person would be horrified by my opened and not deleted or filed emails… Good for you.
I am go glad to hear someone else feels the same way. At one point I was quite free with my email address when a store asked for it. Soon I was drowning in emails about stuff I wasn’t going to buy. I spend a whole afternoon “unsubscribing” and things are much quieter now in my inbox but still some annoying emails still get through
I started designating a day each week where I spend at least an hour unsubscribing and blocking spam…. It does feel like it never ever ever ends but it sure helps to feel like I am making a dent!
I’ve been doing the same thing. I’m feeling so overwhelmed and bombarded with junk. It feels so much better to clear our a lot of the noise and clutter.
I SO need to do this! Too much noise!
I’m with you, Linda. I try to unsubscribe and unfollow on FB cause the noise is overwhelming. Stop this craziness I want to get off. Well, not completely off. You know what I mean, don’t you? 🙂
Oh, yes, it’s all one big headache. I couldn’t agree more. Time to purge!
Yeah, my inbox is getting totally overwhelming too, but a lot of what I get are notices or blog posts about classes, lessons, advice I could take in writing, journalism, or marketing, so I feel sorta guilty unsubscribing for those things. Most of them are really useful, but I still can’t keep up with them all.
I do this periodically and try to keep my inbox empty. But my desk? LOL yeah…it’s a mess.
Been there…Done that. It almost feels as good as cleaning out a closet.
I used to love it when I could see pages in my facebook feed. It was fun once a month to delete some (THERE I SAID IT OUTLOUD and I am proud)!!
It is a constant work in progress to decide what I do and do not want to receive. Email, which was supposed to “save us time” ends up being a time suck nightmare without any filters. And the stores are so aggressive. I can’t get them to stop sending me catalogues, much less their emails. Sometimes even unsubscribing doesn’t work!
Are you available for hire? I’ve been working on the same for what seems like forever, but I turn out the lights and they multiply. Congrats on the progress. You’ve inspired me to get back to it. Oh, and I’d keep See’s Candy, too. That one’s a no-brainer. 🙂
I’m with you, it gets so annoying and overwhelming. I do it almost every week but it sucks about an hour of time, so even deleting the noise, takes time from other things I want to do!
Thanks for the inspiration. I unsubscribe but somehow they keep on coming back. You’re right there is just too much noise that I don’t need. Let us know how you succeed

I’ve done this as well. I even unsubscribed to READER b/c I was getting 208 blog posts per day. PER DAY! I’m also OUT from BlogHer, BlogOn, certain FB groups (not this one), stores, magazines, and some social media platforms. TOO much noise!
Try Unroll. me! It’s been a lifesaver for me!
I agree Linda. I have about 125,000 emails that I haven’t opened. I put my friends and key contacts in VIP and pray that I don’t miss anything. I might have to try Unroll.me.
